SUMMARY:Environmental Sustainability in Health Technology Assessment (onlin
 e)
DESCRIPTION:The climate and ecological crisis are the greatest threat to li
fe on our planet. As a result of\nhuman interaction with the world\, it is
likely we will reach the 1.5°C threshold proposed in the\nParis Agreemen
t by 2027\; dramatically increasing the risks of food and water shortages\
,\nconflict\, extreme weather\, and other crises. United Nations Framework
Convention on\nClimate Change modelling suggests that greenhouse gas (GHG
) emissions need to be cut\n43% by 2030 to avert irreversible environmenta
l catastrophe.\n\nThe National Health Service (NHS) has reported that it i
s responsible for 5% of the UK\ncarbon footprint. In tackling the environm
ental issues that we are facing\; the NHS has\ncommitted to reach net zero
by 2040 for controlled emissions and 2045 through the\npurchasing of good
s and services from appropriate partners and suppliers. The reduction\nwil
l also require the making of socially ethical decisions about the choice o
f healthcare that\nwill be provided\, whether this is pharmaceuticals\, de
vices\, or changes to whole care\npathways. Environmental sustainability i
s likely to become a key part of healthcare decision\nmaking\, including i
n health technology assessment (HTA)\, to support the NHS in reducing its\
nenvironmental footprint. Methods for assessing environmental impact of he
alth technology\nis an emerging area of research\, data acquisition and re
porting. However\, aside from\nquantifying the environmental impact of hea
lthcare\, the real challenge that presents itself to\ndecision makers is h
ow health outcomes (for example\, quality-adjusted life years) and\nenviro
nmental outcomes (for example\, CO 2 e emissions) should be compared and
‘traded off’.\nWhere do we “draw the line” within HTA\, and at the
same time accelerate efforts in\ndeveloping sustainable healthcare?\n\nTh
is webinar provides an overview of current methods to quantify the environ
mental impact\nof healthcare interventions and discusses various approache
 s towards incorporating\nenvironmental sustainability into HTA decisions.\
