 metric metadata plays a key role in supporting research assessment and res
 earch management. The most commonly used bibliometric databases are of a p
 roprietary nature\, but over the past few years\, there has been an import
 ant trend toward open alternatives to these proprietary data sources. In t
 his talk I will highlight some of the key developments\, I will reflect on
  the benefits of open bibliometric metadata\, and I will discuss future tr
